depending on your calculator (because this is a calculator problem), you put in 30 and then find the sine (sin) button on your calculator (you need to have a scientific calculator). You might need to press the sine button first and then put in 30 if you have a more complicated calculator.

Another non-calculator way is to know the sides of a 30-60-90 triangle. They are in the ratio 1x:sqrt 3x:2x. Therefore the sin of 30 is the length of the opposite side over the length of the hypotenuse. In this case 1x over 2x which simplifies to 0.5. If you're doing it on a calculator be sure your angle measures are set to degrees and not radians.
