why does a perpendicular bisector work? in other words, why is the bisector intersect the given line at a 90 degree angle? thank you!!

I remember taking Geometry....I believe this was one of those rules that you just had to memorize, I'm not sure whether or not there was a reason behind why a bisector intersects a given line at a 90 degree angle. Perpendicular bisectors just do that.
