Try conjugate complex numbers: (x +yi) and (x-yi) Add the two numbers and you get 2x which in the problem = 6 So x = 3 Now (3 + yi)(3-yi) = 10 This is 9 +3yi -3yi -y^2(i^2) which is 9 + y^2 = 10 y^2 = 1 or y = + 1 or - 1 Your complex numbers are 3 + i  and 3-i because this results for either choice of y
