You would first solve the radical expression, then take its absolute value. If the radical is an even root, then there are both a positive and negative solution, and the positive (or its absolute value) is called the principal root. Odd roots have only one solution (either positive or negative), which is the principal root. So, taking the absolute value of an odd root is simply the absolute value of an odd root.
