I am really confused.  How do you know when to use distance, rate or time to answer the question?

when you have a certain problem.  ie., when a car is travelling 65 mph for 20 miles, how long will it take.  How do you determine which formula to use?

It depends on the problem that you have. If you are looking for distance, use D = rt. If you are looking for rate, use D/t = r. If you are looking for time, use D/r = t.
