Triglycerid lipids are energy storage units, cushioning and insulation.  Phospholipids are the major components of membranes around cells and in organelles.  Steroids are four fused ring structures that are found in cell membranes to stabilize the membrane against drastic temperature changes and outside the membranes they act as hormone messengers that signal cells to turn on portions of their genes.
